It seems I’ve become obsessed with the beauty of the Amazon Rain Forest.  I know only what I see in photographs and what see in my mind’s eye, but with each vision, I am overcome with passion for the multitude of species there.  The Amazon Rain Forest is a perfect balance of nature.   Temperatures are extremely high and the frequent rains are intense, but the forest canopy provides shade and also protection from erosive rains.   Intricate root systems store rain water, which is utilized during times of no rain.   Fallen leaves and branches on the forest floor give nutrients for the growing plants.   In this way the forest provides a perfect home for a number of life-forms so vast that it is beyond comprehension.  The exotic birds of the rain forest have always fascinated me, and with further study, I am now equally interested in the incredible plant life, all the wonderful wildlife and the ancient native cultures.   Large areas of this pristine forest are being destroyed in the name of progress.   Important reasons for keeping the forest intact include valuable crops and medicines, a stable global climate and the protection of wildlife, as well as the small groups of people who understand how to survive there.

I have created this sculpture with hope that it will remind each viewer of the beauty in this special place and perhaps even compel some of us to contribute what we can to preserve the great rain forest of the Amazon.
